My Top Albums of 2007
With so much great music coming from everywhere around the world and genres finally blending and bleeding into each other, 2007 is going to be considered a watershed year in music! My list of the albums I listened to the most in descending order...
MIA-Kala-I can't say enough about this record. It is one of the greatest musical accomplishments ever made. Its the sound of 50 years of popular music from around the world wildly collapsing into a 50 minute rush. It has so much force, anger and integrity, if MIA never made another record her legend would be secure.
Of Montreal-Hissing Fauna are You the Destroyer-I love Prince records. This is the closest thing to a new, progressive Prince record I've heard since the early 90's.
Burial-Untrue-A dark, foggy night masterpiece
Panda Bear-Person Pitch-Like listening to David Lynch make a Beach Boys record. Made Chris Snyder hallucinate in a van.
LCD Soundsystem-Sound of Silver-Masterful story telling about the pains, sadness and joys of growing into your 30s. All My Friends will be listened to forever.
The Field-From Here We Go Sublime-Ice cold and warming, minimalist but epic. Its that magical sort of headset electronic music where you can sit and drift off into your imagination as the beats repeat.
Animal Collective-Strawberry Jam-Funny, chaotic, experimental. Made with pure joy. The magic of listening to seeming chaos catch foothold and stomp into rhythm.
Fabric Live 33-Spank Rock-One of the best dance mixes ever created for my buck. All Spank Rock crew members represent! Spank Rock! Amanda Blank! Pase Rock! Devlin! Darko! (as your humble DJs)
Feist-The Reminder-There's a lot of great new singer songwriter ladies with some wit and verve. This album is probably the new standard.
Lil Wayne-Da Drought 3-Listening to Weezy destroy beat after beat. To here someone so purely in love with word play, with his stream of conscious, never ceases to bring my joy. And as always the greatest sports references ever...
Daft Punk-Alive 2007-The ultimate Daft Punk mix tape. High energy from beginning to end.
The Dream-Love Me All Summer/Hate Me All Winter-Like listening to Bobby Browns Don't Be Cruel or BBDs Poison or TLCs Oh on the TLC tip for the first time. Pure joyful R&B energy. Great lyrics, amazing music. This will be a defining pop/R&B record.
Wu Tang Clan-8 Diagrams-The Wu and RZA STILL coming with it after all these years. Deep, dark, fresh, creepy, disorienting.
Jens Lekman-Night Falls on Kortedala-Another masterful storytelling coming into his own. With intriguing sample based music production throughout.
Kanye West-Graduation-In the end, a surprising, minimalist (for him) little album that brings greater appreciation on each listen.
Kings of Leon-Because of the Times-Song after song of sweeping Southern epic. I've listened to True Love Way on repeat for days at a time.
Ne-Yo-Because of You-Classic and classy R&B. Smooth with the slight edges of the street.
Rihanna-Good Girl Gone Bad-She gets serious about music and it pays pretty amazing dividends. She chooses songs of pretty high complexity and emotion and demands some hard, often counter balance production that keeps you on edge throughout. She said Brandys Afrodisiac record was her bar. She's not quite to Brandy's level, but she's competing now.
Black Lips-Good Bad Not Evil-The record I haven't listened to much, but the live show is a sight to behold. The best live rock band going right now!
Alicia Keys-As I Am-As much as I can get down on Alicia Keys for being boring and square, the middle two thirds of this record are undeniable. You can hear her working hard. She wants to be Stevie Wonder. Keep working Alicia, you may get there.
Simian Mobile Disco-Attack Decay Sustain Release-After seeing their live show, this album came to life. So much dirty energy, devil may care electronic music.
Justice-Cross-The ultimate dirty house record. A lesson in how to make 4/4 digital drums disgusting and filthy.
Bonde Do Role-With Lasers-Marina just left the group so they may be done. That little Brazilian girl brings so much raw energy to the album and especially live, she should be a huge, huge star.
Band of Horses-Cease to Begin-Moving to the South has taken this band's epic sweep into interesting gothic territories I truly enjoy.
Rich Boy-Rich Boy-Some confused politics and largely mediocre rapping from Rich Boy himself, but a defining moment for Polow Da Don. His ugly/beautiful production style is one of the most amazing new things to listen to the last year or so.
T-Pain-Epiphany-This album has numerous pot holes. But when this crazy robot hits, he hits big and god he's hit big this year. A lesson must be learned here. People love robots singing, it makes me happy, it makes everyone happy!
Prodigy-Return of the Mac-Gutter, depressed, angry, lost. Finally a new Mobb Deep record!
White Stripes-Icky Thump-Bitter, stomping, prolific and minimal at the same time. Jack White continues to give the goods.
Fall Out Boy-Infinity on High-Pete Wentz's lyrical ode to celebrity both comic, arrogant and stupid with moments of high genius. Patrick Stump growing by leaps and bounds as a music producer. Love them or hate them. These guys are probably going to be sticking around.
Battles-Mirrored-Another of the new wave of anti-lyric, non traditional electronic based pop records. (what a mouthful) A bit of a hard listen, but there's a lot of uplift in the chaos and hard beats of these songs.
