The Dream
The Dream is an exciting semi new Rhythm and Blues songwriter. His magic is in his tics. Somehow the repetition of the ends of words or sounds (A, ella, ella), at least for me, and probably his growing number of fans creates this weird emotional stop gap. Like finishing off a sentence and having more to say and not knowing what to say and stumbling and repeating yourself cause you didn't feel like you explained yourself properly. I've read some negative reviews of his and J Holiday's number one hit Bed, passing it off as a simple "over-sexed" song. But it is my favorite song of the year. An emotional ballad to sex with a girlfriend after a long work week. Some jackass, one of the main writers, at the onions av club compared it to Silk's Freak Me. A song that is great in its straightforward dramatic salaciousness , but Bed is an entirely different piece of work. Compare the lines in Bed. "she like, "how long I've been sleep?"/shorty's kisses turn into the sweetest dreams/like give it to me/and i can feel her tummy" to "i want to lick you up and down/to you say stop" and you can start to understand my point. Bed
is some intimate, in bed, in a serious relationship shit. I've probably listened to the song well over 100 times and some of the passages still give me the chills. This on top of Rhianna's Umbrella, Mary J. Blige's new song "Just Fine" and his own "Shawty is a 10" make me overwhelming excited to buy his Def Jam solo release next month and follow him (and the often interesting production by Tricky Stewart that usually accompanies his songs) for a long time to come.
The Dream's Falsetto from his spectacularly titled album "Love Me All Summer/Hate Me All Winter" (this is more like Freak Me!!!!)
